The worst barbarities of the war in Bosnia will not go unpunished even after thirty years.In this spirit, the writer Ezio Gavazzeni (Milan, 1959) filed a complaint before the Italian justice system providing the necessary material to initiate a criminal investigation against the so-called tourist snipers in Sarajevo.People who, between 1992 and 1995, paid to kill children, adults and the elderly for fun, hidden among the hills of the Bosnian capital.
In an interview with EL MUNDO, Gavazeni delves into the details of the investigation shared with the Milan prosecutor's office, which has just opened a criminal case based on multiple voluntary murders, with evil motives and brutality, and reflects on the importance of his appeal around the world in recent days.
Is your investigation into the Sarajevo snipers getting your historical significance?
- I have two different feelings. On the one hand, great satisfaction, because it means the fruit of the last two years that I dedicated to this research and in a way that I did not even imagine. I have received calls from all countries of the world. However, on the other hand, what surprises me is that no one has been interested in this issue in the last 30 years. For example, the Sarajevo Safari (2022) reports by Miran Zupani, produced by the Al Jazeera television network.After the premiere of the movie, I am surprised that no western television has bought it to air it.
- In fact, the Slovenian director Zupani was a valuable contact for your research.
- In my research there are many sources, but the first one I got advice from Zupani.He was very kind and gave me some advice.Then my work went much further and was extensive enough for the prosecutor's office in Milan to open a criminal case.My complaint, filed last February, was 17 pages long and summarized all my investigations so far.When the prosecutor's office in Milan decided to open the investigation, last October, I provided another 90 pages of all the additional material I had obtained after consulting several sources up to that point.
- The investigation by Italian judges, led by prosecutors Marcello and Alesbbbis, will be led by a special group of Carabbinareri, known as raggrup verati proviale (Ros).They are expected to question your sources of communication and your work.
- The Carabinieri ROS has enough elements to start the investigation and promote higher media than a writer.Likewise, they will call me to testify.It will be an opportunity for me to contribute more information about certain sources that must be put into context.
- Can the achievements of Italian justice create a domino effect in other courts around the world in prosecuting murderers?
- I hope there will be a domino effect.Among other things, because I was the only one who initiated criminal proceedings in a Western country.The clients came from many countries: they were Italians, Germans, French, English, Spanish, Americans or Canadians.Why has no country ever opened an investigation?Maybe because they were powerful, rich and socially relevant people.Meanwhile, there are international journalists who have asked me for advice on how to start these processes in their countries.
- Let's talk about the killers.How do you explain that people who are less able to do good are not good?

- Your research on tourist snipers in Sarajevo has inestimable journalistic, legal, historical and human value.Why is it important to stay engaged in your work?
- I was surprised when word began to circulate about what happened in Sarajevo without anyone seeing it.Being annoying in the work of journalism and investigation, I managed to dig myself.I am a writer and have always enjoyed devoting myself to this activity and in recent years I have focused on research work.My duty is to follow the story and when I find it, I know that I have to continue it.Even if it's unpleasant.
